The following section gives you a general overview of role-playing from terminology to character backgrounds.
Firstly I would like to take a moment to recommend you visit the website for the Loreil Academy . They are one of the most talented, highly creative and skilled role playing Realms online. The Wardens at the Loreil Academy teach various classes to help role players hone your writing abilities. Now for the more basic of explanation and tidbits on role playing, read the segments below.
What's in a name? Everything!
Choosing a name is the first big decision you make when you enter the realms of fantasy. It may be the biggest decision of all when it comes to character creation and development. You may, through your RP career, raise your stats and skills as you play but the name stays with you. Once you create a name the next step is development of the character's history.
Be original but be in context for the time frame you're working with. Castle o' th' Moors is based, primarily in the mid 15th century, approximately the 1460's. Decide where you want to go with your character. Do you want them to be a knight? Perhaps a mage or even a healer? Or maybe you wish to be a farmer, a carpenter, perhaps a leather merchant? All these are open to you and your imagination.
But first your name. Who will you be? Are you a Smith? The surname Smith derives from Blacksmith, hence sometimes being called Smithy. A common name to be sure but it will give you an idea of how to arrive at a name you can live with. It's okay to borrow from literature but please don't steal! For someone to come in with a name of Gandalf would immediately give the impression that the character is an accomplished magician, which you would NOT be starting out. Your reputation will grow as you learn and show. Use of Native American names is prevalent in the fantasy world, such as WhiteWolf, Soaring Eagle and such. Think if your character might have some association with nature. Elves are a big hit as well. Let your imagination take sail!
It's unadvisable to title yourself with Lady Whatever or Lord Whatever. This is an assumption on your part and you can always create a name with Lord or Lady at the front later with your name attached to it. Keep in mind that you'll be stuck with the name you finally settle on so something like Boopiekins or Gor'Togsidesaddle may sound cute but not when you've been inducted into the Knights and have Lord or Lady attached to them.
Gaelic spellings are fun and look good though the long ones can be difficult to pronounce so keep the other players abilities in mind! They may not take the time to pronounce the name and you'll just end up with a nickname anyway. Stay away from making sentences, for example, Iamgoingtokillyou or such names as Evilguy or Thedestroyer. They make assumptions that your dice may not be able to support. Did I say dice? Oh yes, this is a dice realm as well as a storytelling realm. We'll get into that soon enough.
Some Role-playing terminology
Role-playing -
To assume or act out a particular role of a character. Commonly referred to as "RP"
Death match -
A spar between two characters resulting in death. Also referred to as "DM"
Slave Match -
a spar between two characters the end result being the loser becomes the slave to the winner for a duration of time (day, week, month etc.) predetermined before the fight begins. Also referred to as "SM"
Release Match -
A match fought to release a character from a particular arrangement.
Also referred to as a "RM"
Assassination Attempt -
An act where one character attempts to instantly kill another one with a sneak attack either out of the blue or with the muns consent prior to attack. Also referred to as "AA"
Spar -
A fighting match between two or more characters. Before the match begins, the terms are settled (i.e. what dice will be used, weapons to be used, duration of fight or the ending score, etc). Then initiative is rolled to see who goes first. Spars are generally harmless battles used for practice.
In Character -
A term used to describe the character you portray. When you are "In Character", or as it is referred to as "IC", you are acting as your character and any actions or words typed are those of your characters.
Out Of Character -
A term used to describe a situation when you are not IC. When you are Out of Character, also referred to as "OOC," any actions typed or words said are your own. OOC remarks are often tagged by being placed between double parenthesis. For instance: ((This would be seen as an OOC remark))
:: :: -
When describing an action your character is doing, double colons are placed on either side to separate it from a speaking line. For instance:
"Why yes, I would Love another cup of tea. Thank you ::she said as the waiter tilted the pot, spilling forth the steaming tea into the customers cup::"
the pouring of the tea was the action and s it was placed between double sets of colons.
Of course SOME of us have taken to writing in story form, which noted as plain text for the actions and using " quotations for the speech.
(( )) -
Out of Character labels.
Mun -
Refers to the OOC person that plays a character.
Dice using
Dice are often used in RP to give some random results. This gives the people involved a chance to use their creativeness to work around the unforeseen. The command line for dice rolling is: //roll-dice (number of dice)-sides (number of sides on the dice). i.e.: to roll 2 20 sided dice, the command line would be //roll-dice 2-sides 20.
This command line only works in chat rooms, private or public, though is usually frowned upon in public. The command line is typed in only after your characters actions are described.
Often they are also used in according to a characters rank. The higher the rank, the higher the characters dice. In the Moors the highest dice any one person can have is 2d40's (2 40 sided dice) which are held only by the King. The dice start out at 2d20 and go up by 2's each rank. 2d20, 2d22, 2d24, 2d26, etc etc up to 2d36 which only the Division Commanders hold.
Spar Rules
1) Acceptable spar matches require a proctor who performs all proctor duties (see below), and that after the match, the combatants submit to examination and/or healing if a healer is available. Only the lack of a healer online is justification for not performing this step.
2) Spar matches can be fought in two ways; as an informal match, using 2d20 for both combatants, or a formal match (the preferred way), which employs the rank dice of the combatants.
3) Duties of Proctors during spars are as follows:
A) Log the Spar.
B) Announce the dice being used, the scores the combatants must achieve for victory and call for inits.
C) Call the score each round, in a format similar to Round (#): Combatant1- (score) Combatant2- (score)
D) Find available healers for the after spar examination (required) and healing (if desired). To facilitate examination, the proctor's mun will give the healer's mun a basic rundown of the injuries inflicted.
4) Combatants are granted hit points (HPs) to the value of their dice. Thus it takes a score of 20 points to defeat a Squire or 36 points to defeat a Duke. In an informal match, no matter your dice, you have 20 HPs because you are using 2d20.
